Welcome to Cincinnati Therapeutic Riding and Horsemanship and the Hippotherapy
Program
ABOUT HIPPOTHERAPY
Hippotherapy is a physical, occupational and speech therapy treatment
strategy that utilizes equine
movement. Hippotherapy is utilized as part of an integrated treatment program to
achieve functional outcomes.
In hippotherapy, the patient engages in activities on the horse that are
enjoyable and challenging. In the controlled environment, the therapist modifies
the horse’s movement and carefully grades sensory input. Specific riding skills
are not taught (as in therapeutic horseback riding); but rather a foundation is
established to improve neurological function and sensory processing. This
foundation can be generalized to a wide range of daily activities.
The horse’s walk provides sensory input through movement, which is variable,
rhythmic, and repetitive. The resultant movement responses in the patient are
similar to human movement patterns of the pelvis while walking. The variability
of the horse’s gait enables the therapist to grade the degree of sensory input
to the patient, and then utilizes this movement in combination with other
treatment strategies to achieve desired results. Patients respond
enthusiastically to this enjoyable experience in a natural setting (American
Hippotherapy Association).
ABOUT OUR PROGRAM
Our program will be utilizing a physical therapist and occupational
therapists. The physical therapist and occupational therapists are members of NARHA (North American Riding for the Handicapped Association) and are registered
AHA (American Hippotherapy Association) therapists. As CRH is a NARHA Premier
accredited program, a NARHA certified instructor will be on the grounds for all
therapy sessions while the patients are mounted on horses. Many trained
volunteers will be assisting with sidewalking and leading our wonderful horses.
Our horses have been trained extensively and are critical to the program. The
patient will spend 25-30 minutes on the horse and the fee is $60.00 per session.
Some parents have utilized other resources and CRH will complete billing codes
and signatures for any 3rd party billing form (supplied by the parent), at the
end of the entire session (payment must be received in advance and it is your
responsibility to attempt reimbursement).
ABOUT CALLING IN IF YOUR CHILD IS GOING TO BE ABSENT
Call the stables at 513-831-7050 at least 24 hours in advance. Any
cancellations, without 24 hour notice, will be charged the session rate. Please
remember we have scheduled many professionals, volunteers, horses and we have
some potential riders on a waiting list to get into the program.
